Today, Ireland took over the Presidency of the Council of the EU. Together with farmers’ groups, civil society organisations and community groups, we sent an open letter urging the new Presidency to rethink the EU’s and Ireland’s current approach to biomethane expansion.
We warn that expanding biomethane production risks locking Europe into polluting industrial livestock farming, undermining efforts to reduce livestock numbers and build a more sustainable and resilient food system. Rural communities are being asked to carry an unfair share of the environmental, social and infrastructural burden, while the benefits often flow elsewhere. Through this open letter, we aim to ensure that these concerns are part of the conversation as the EU shapes its future energy and agriculture policies.
Europe needs to transition away from fossil fuels and environmentally destructive industrial systems. The current trajectory of industrial biomethane will not deliver that transition. We need to change course.
